How to Write a Report on Research

Some academic assignments require a “report” rather than an essay, and students are frequently perplexed as to what this entails. Though it can seem to be similar to writing an essay, it is critical that you understand the differences between the two.

In my previous article, the meaning, features, and types of report writing were explained. Therefore, this article will be limited to the format of report writing and how to write a report on research?

Format Of Report Writing

The key parts of a typical report writing format are as follows:

Title Section – The name(s) of the author(s) and the date the report was written are included here. Your report’s title should be concise and easy to understand. It must clearly state the context of the research. Keep in mind that this isn’t a novel. If required, provide a subtitle, but make sure the font size of each subtitle is smaller than the main title.

Summary – A summary of the main points, findings, and recommendations are needed. Since it is a general summary of the report, it must be brief. Some people would only skim the report after reading the introduction, so make sure you have all the relevant details. It’s best to write this last so that you remember everything, including any points that come up at the last minute.

Introduction – An introduction should appear on the first page of the paper. Explain the purpose of the report and why it was created. You need to give a definition of terminology if you did not include these in the title section and clarify how the report’s descriptions are structured. The introduction may be a paragraph or an entire page long, depending on the length of your report.

Body – This is the main section of the report where all the information is put together. There should be several pages, each with its own subtitle. In most cases, information is arranged in order of importance, with the most important information appearing first.

Conclusion – A well-crafted conclusion should be included at the end of your report. Make it a quick summary of what was covered in the report, and don’t forget to mention the recommendations section and the appendix’s tools.

Recommendations – This is what must be done. Explain your suggestions in plain English, putting them in order of importance. This section is not important in school or book reports, but it is necessary for business.

Appendices – If you’re writing a research paper, this is the area where you list all of your references. You can also provide any related links to the report – or previous reports on the same topic.

#1 CHOOSING A REPORT TOPIC

If your educator has provided you with a list of possible topics, you can simply select the one that appeals to you the most and move on to the next level. If this is not the case and you must select a narrow subject on your own, make sure it is one that resonates with and encourages you.

#2 SEARCHING FOR SOURCES AND RESOURCES ON THE SUBJECT.

Given the abundance of resources available online, ranging from science studies to statistics, etc, this should not be too difficult. However, don’t forget to double-check the details you find to ensure that they accurately reflect the subject of your research.

#3 WRITE THE MAIN BODY OF YOUR REPORT

This stage can be broken down into three parts. First and foremost, draft a thesis statement, which will serve as the central concept and foundation for your work. Unlike when writing an essay, one thesis argument should suffice. Another important distinction between a report and an essay is that there is no room for subjectivity. Your findings must be as objective as possible at all times. You can build a layout for your study once you have a strong thesis statement. You can start with your thesis statement and then provide evidence for it, or the other way around. Just remember to plan out your report structure before you start writing.

The second part is where you write your report once you’ve developed a clear strategy. There aren’t many rules one should note on how to write a report and some of them include:

Maintain a straightforward approach – Instead of trying to impress, try to connect. Simple, to-the-point sentences are best. If it’s not absolutely necessary, don’t go into too much detail. Make certain that every word is essential and contributes to the report’s goal.

Make use of active voice – The use of active voice allows the writing to flow seamlessly and easily. It also uses fewer words than the passive voice and emphasizes the person or thing responsible for an action, giving the writing more effective.

Plagiarism is not tolerated – Using as few quotations or parts of text written by others.

Remember to use proper grammar – Read the article out loud and get it proofread by someone else. Remember that the computer would not be able to detect all of your errors. You may want to come back and reread it a day or two after you’ve finished writing it.

Organize the writing into paragraphs – The advantages of organizing details are simply too great: your study will be more logical, and it will be easier to read and understand later.

The final step is to write your introduction and conclusion, which are standard structural components of any paper assignment. Your thesis statement, report objectives, and reasons for choosing the subject are all included in the introduction. The aim of the conclusion is to draw a line under your ideas and summarize them.

To write entertaining, memorable reports, you’ll need to stick to a standard report writing style. If you take the recommendations above, you’ll never have to write another boring article.
