The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is a branch of the Gauteng Department of Education, a South African government department in charge of skill development within the province. The GCRA assists students in developing their skills within the province by facilitating and coordinating bursaries, internships, learnerships, and career guidance programmes.

The GCRA bursary programme is open to all qualified youth, with a preference for youth from Gauteng, who wish to study for an undergraduate and/or postgraduate programme at a South African accredited and registered Post School Education and Training institution.

The bursary covers the entire cost of study, subject to the conditions outlined in the bursary contract.

Documents Required for GCRA Bursary Applications

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Full academic record, if currently studying (certified copy)
  • Proof of acceptance to study at a recognised PSET institution/ institution of higher learning (on institutions letterhead)
  • Proof of address in Gauteng (Water and Electricity bill/ stamped ward councillors letter/ letter from traditional authority if in a rural area)
  • Motivational letter (explaining why you require and deserve to be awarded the bursary: maximum 2 pages)
  • Disability or medical report if disabled
  • Parents or guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed)

Application Requirements for the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) Bursaries 2022

  • Students who completed matric and reside in Gauteng – Proof of residence required
  • Students intending to study an undergraduate programme and have been accepted at an accredited PSET institution of learning and/or is currently registered for such.
  • Students who want to pursue Post-Graduate studies and have been accepted at an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Top Achievers from Gauteng Schools
  • Top learner from no-fee paying schools in Gauteng
  • Top 3 learner from LSEN schools in Gauteng
  • A South African Citizen
  • Youth residing in Gauteng between the age of 18 and 35

Notes About the GCRA Bursary

  • If you are having difficulty accessing the GCRA portal, please check your internet connection or use a different browser (Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer).
  • Make a note of your login information (after you receive an SMS to confirm your registration on the GCRA system).
  • Applicants may begin their application, save it, and return to it later, but please keep in mind that you must “submit” your application before the closing date.
  • If you previously received GCRA funding for your undergraduate studies and are now applying for funding for your postgraduate studies, you must reapply because it is a new qualification (your details may be on the system still and you will need to update them).
  • Candidates who are already recipients of another bursary may apply if they require additional funding – please indicate this on your application.
  • If your application was denied, you may file an appeal by emailing gdeinfo@gauteng.gov.za.
  • GCRA bursary funds are paid directly to the institution where successful candidates are enrolled; however, certain funds (laptop and book allowance) may be paid to students directly. Students will also receive direct payments for living expenses.
